Surprise, surprise—Peru’s remote stretch of jungle isn’t rigged with cell towers. That said, going as off-the-grid as 2017 will allow is a breath of fresh (non-radiation-emitting) air. At Fundo Casual we were treated to a sighting of a giant bird eater tarantula on both visits. The one we saw the first time was massive, measuring roughly the size of my head. We also enjoyed observing three different species of poison dart frogs during these walks. On the skiffs, we saw countless random things like leaf frogs, golden-crowned tree rats, bats that look like sticks, butterflies, moths, dragonflies, and the list goes on and on. Before breakfast, we will visit Nauta, the second most important city in the region. Upon arrival, we will take a motocar tour to the local market where we will learn first-hand what the commercial life of the city is like. In the afternoon, we will visit the native community of San Regis, where we will learn about their way of life and traditions. We will also learn about ancestral traditions from the local shaman. Our guides will act as interpreters during this experience, in which you will have the opportunity to ask questions about spiritual connections and the shaman´s abilities to heal the soul. Later, you'll transfer to the airport in Iquitos and board a connecting flight to Cusco. Once the capital of the Inca Empire, this city retains its ancient Indigenous ruins and Spanish-colonial landmarks. Upon arrival, you'll transfer about 9 miles (15 km) north of the city to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Extending along the Urubamba River, the valley encompasses picturesque villages, archaeological sites, and gorgeous highland scenery.

Later, you'll return to the terminal and board a luxury train for the four-hour ride south to Cusco. We opted to combine the itineraries for 8 days and 7 nights. This enabled us to explore both routes, see different things, and compare the two options. Delfin does offer this option to all guests, however, we were the only ones that booked the longer option. Its creation was a pivotal step towards preserving the region’s biodiverse ecosystems.
