FreelandBuck is a full service architecture design practice formed in 2009 and based in Los Angeles. Partners David and Brennan have over 15 years of experience in architecture and landscape architecture. The firm has exhibited widely and received the 2011 ArchIs Prize for emerging architects from the Los Angeles AIA. California Home + Design magazine recognized FreelandBuck as one of the “10 to Watch” new architecture offices in 2011. Our work has been featured in Architectural Record, Detail, Frame, Azure, Surface and LOG as well as several recent books on architecture and technology.

Next, from the center of vision, project a gridded floor into the room that replicates the gridded floor you drew in your floor plan, recalling that one square equals one square foot. The project’s focus is on learning how to draw a three-dimensional scene using principles of perspective developed by Renaissance artists (see Drawing a Three-Dimensional Room below). My secret intention, however, is to help students construct a clear, mental image of a physical place where they’ve reached their art-making goals. The full assignment involves creating both interior and exterior views, but for the purpose of this article, I chose seven interiors from last spring’s class of 30 students. Renaissance artists developed technical rules for drawing three-dimensional interiors, but you can simplify the formula. Students and seasoned artists alike can use “outcome visualization” to attain any goal or objective. We can all take Aristotle’s philosophy to heart, and — whether we draw it, paint it or sculpt it — with patience and hard work, we can make it happen. Rather, modern-day scientific evidence posits that “outcome visualization” is a part of our nature. While the brain may get the wheels in motion, it takes both mind and body to realize an imagined outcome. The science of architecture is continuously evolving and will do so over the life of every architect. In addition to the science of architecture, we are equally committed to ensuring that our graduates acquire a critical philosophy with which they can engage the design of the built environment. It was with this idea in mind that I developed an “outcome visualization” assignment for my drawing and illustration students at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. The project, which spans several weeks, requires students to design their own dream art studio with no restrictions on building size, location, architectural style or, most importantly, cost. The assignment is veiled to guide students on their journeys toward becoming professional artists. Whoever came up with the saying “location, location, location” must have been talking about USC’s School of Cinematic Arts.
Designed by Australian practice Sans-Arc Studio for a small cottage in a suburb of Adelaide, the Plaster Fun House is intended to be at odds to the surrounding brickwork buildings. This section delves into designing the ecosystem’s building blocks and the entities that bring myth and legend into being. Places are more than mere backdrops for action; they are living components of the world that interact with and influence the characters and stories. Through these creative explorations, artists construct immersive experiences that captivate and engage audiences, inviting them to explore worlds beyond the confines of reality.
The role of artists and collaborative networks can be instrumental in visualizing these political structures. Creators must meticulously craft each component—from geography to social norms—with a keen eye for consistency and complexity. The art of world-building lies in assembling these parts to create an intricate tapestry that feels tangible to the audience. The most emblematic building on the famous Promenade des Anglais, Nice's main boulevard overlooking the Mediterranean, is the awe-inspiring Palais de la Mediterranée. And while the French Riviera city has no shortage of art deco examples (about 600 of them, actually), the current Hyatt Regency hotel stands out with its grandeur. Modeled after Paris' Opéra Garnier, the white-washed façade of the building features a duo of stately pediments, wondrous bas-reliefs dedicated to the Greek god Poseidon, and imposing arcades and colonnades.
