This ensures that your hair strands never get overheated, which means that they can't be unexpectedly broken or burnt. By using flexing plates, the Corrale also ensures that the heat in its plates makes even contact with your hair, so you can achieve a long-lasting style at a lower temperature. Less heat damage, breakage, and frizz to create a softer, fuller head of hair in the long run. If you couldn't tell, there are a lot of ways to customize the Airstrait, which is great! It means there are multiple options for different types of hair.

Regardless, she prefers the RevAir Reverse-Air Dryer (9/10, WIRED Recommends) for wet to dry hair. Even though it leaves her hair a bit puffier, it's faster and dries larger sections. But the Airstrait does a better job of smoothing it when her hair is damp or dry. But just because it works on my short locks doesn't mean it's going to work on all hair types. Dyson stresses that it designed the Airstrait for multiple hair types, so I enlisted the help of WIRED product reviewer Medea Giordano. She tested the Airstrait on what she describes as “very coarse and dry” hair.

I'm constantly trying to persuade everyone around me to invest in at least one of them. A couple of years ago, I bought my mom the Supersonic for Mother’s Day. Last year, I convinced my friends to pool our money together to buy the Corrale for our best friend's 30th birthday.

After only two attempts, I was ready to throw my blow dryer and flat iron in the trash. I was able to dry my roots and ends quickly thanks to the lock feature, which allows you to shut the Airstrait's arms in place to use as a rough dryer. I held it at the root and end of each chunk of hair for a few seconds (the same way I would with a standard hair dryer) before straightening it. But the rest of my hair was still damp even after multiple passes between the arms. I set my flat iron to a whopping 450 degrees every time—so I should've gone for the highest settings to begin with. If you want to press, curl, and straighten your hair from dry, then the Corrale is the ideal cordless product for you.

More importantly, it keeps the tool from blowing everything away on my bathroom counter. Try a Dyson Corrale today to straighten, smooth, or curl your hair with less damage. The only straightener with flexing copper plates that shape to gather hair. Best of all, it's officially helped me overcome my fear of wet-to-dry straighteners. So, I powered that bad boy up to 285 degrees, set the fan on high, and watched as it dried and straightened a chunk of hair with just two passes. I continued, passing the Airstrait twice through each piece of hair for about six seconds.

In dry mode, you can pick between 250 degrees, 285 degrees, and boost mode. You can alternate between low-flow and high-flow speed settings as well. There's also the option for a cool mode, which helps set the style. To use a Dyson Hair Straightener, make sure to first air dry or blow dry your hair fully. Choose the heat setting that suits your hair type, length, and desired style, then wait a few moments for your straightener to quickly heat up. I, on the other hand, will be sticking with the Airstrait.

The Dyson Corrale Hair Straightener can be used to create beachy waves, curls, sleek volume, and smooth, straight hair on many different hair types and textures. It comes with a luxurious, heat-resistant travel pouch, sleek charging dock, and magnetic charging cable. Unlike most other cordless hair straighteners, Corrale products can be used while they charge, so you're never left without your most important hair tools. Compared to other hair straighteners, Dyson promises that the Corrale delivers enhanced straightening and styling with half the damage of a traditional flat iron. It uses flexible manganese copper alloy plates to gently shape and gather strands of hair, so you can achieve the same hairstyle effects using less heat. I was slightly relieved to see that it's more of a hair dryer-straightener combo.

What makes the Dyson Corrale Hair Straightener different?

I usually end up going to bed with wet hair and straightening it in the morning. As Dyson explained during the demo of the Airstrait, when the hair is wet the hydrogen bonds are naturally weakened—making your hair more malleable and easier to reshape. With no heat plates, you're probably wondering how the Airstrait works. Located along both arms of the device are 1.5-mm gaps. Airflow travels via the motor, splits into both arms, and accelerates through the gaps to create two high-velocity downward blades of air. At a 45-degree angle, those blades merge to create one focused jet of air that moves downward to straighten the hair as it dries—resulting in a natural, smooth finish.

Each button is labeled intuitively, with a red for heat, a blue for cool mode, a raindrop icon for wet hair mode, etc. But I find myself staring at the controls for longer than I'd like to, trying to remember how to get to certain settings. Dyson could have made the display bigger and merged a few of the buttons instead. I highly recommend tapping through all the menus first, so you're familiar with each one.

In total, it only took me 12 minutes to get through all my hair. Create smooth hair with gentle bends and movement at the ends. The Airstrait has diffusers (the gold pieces that stick out from the side) that help keep the air flowing onto your hair instead of onto you. As someone with sensitive skin, I'm always left with a lot of redness after blow-drying my hair. Regardless of how high the heat setting is, I don't experience irritation with the Airstrait. The diffusers are removable, making it easy to clean away any product, like a heat protectant, that may build up over time. In addition to watching your hair dry, you'll also hear the Airstrait working. With the ability to sense when the hair is clamped within the device, it automatically increases airflow.

It minimizes heat damage and creates sculpted, long-lasting hairstyles with minimal flyaways. Effective straightening requires both heat and time. The Dyson Corraleᵀᴹ straightener delivers up to 30 minutes cordless styling² with the thermal performance of a corded hair straightener. And if you need to style for longer, just attach the cable for hybrid charge mode.

To set the temperature, there's a digital color display to see what mode you're on and buttons underneath to cycle through each setting. Choose from two main styling modes—wet and dry—and three temperature settings for each. With wet mode, you'll have the choice of 175, 230, or 285 degrees Fahrenheit.

What makes the Dyson Corrale Hair Straightener different?

Instead of squeezing your wet hair between hot plates, it uses airflow to dry and straighten your hair. My mix of wavy, curly, and coarse hair requires as much heat as possible to avoid looking frizzy and puffy. But as with the company's previous hair tools, I should've known.

It's also a relief that I no longer have to apply as much heat to my hair with a flat iron to achieve a salon-style look. I hate styling my hair out of the shower, because it takes me forever (40 to 45 minutes).

SoupsSoups are all served with warm bread from the bakery and include tomato basil, French onion, loaded baked potato, and whatever the soup of the day may be. If you’d like, you can order your soup served in a homemade bread bowl. Visiting The Old Mill Pottery House Café & Grille is more than just enjoying a meal; it’s immersing oneself in the heritage of Pigeon Forge. The combination of exquisite Southern cuisine, artisan pottery, and the historical ambiance makes it a unique dining experience.

Reservations, location and parking

For example, you can easily make it a strawberry spinach salad and loaded baked potato. The Pottery House Cafe and Grille is one of two restaurants to call the Old Mill Square home, despite the relatively small size of the square. Each serves a different crowd and a different style of food. The Cafe and Grille, for instance, offers a quick-serve menu of salads, soups and sandwiches. The food served here is a trendy take on Southern classics. While the food served at the Old Mill Restaurant is Sunday supper standards.

Daily Menu - served each day from 11 am to close

The Old Mill Pottery House Café & Grille is the finest and most picturesque dining experience in the Smoky Mountains. Here you will find the highest quality steaks, southern catfish and fresh seafood, as well as other southern comfort foods. The lunch specials range between about $10-14 and include items like spicy catfish, shrimp and grits, grilled salmon and pork chops. Lunch also features soups and sandwiches and some big city salads (baby wedge, kale and berries, and the southern green tomatoes and bacon salad). I enjoy getting the triple decker club sandwich with soup. It’s a lighter meal that will give you energy for the rest of your day of adventuring.

Build-A-Combos are popular at about $10 for a salad with half of a sandwich or a cup of soup. Heartier dishes are also available at a reasonable price but keep it light or you may need an after-lunch nap. When you go, be sure not to miss out on one of their signature items like their signature quiche plates and fresh baked bread. Burgers are plentiful and feature black Angus, potter’s, smokehouse, and pimento burgers. The brunch menu is a bit more limited compared to the plethora of brunch options in Pigeon Forge.

Our Food

However, it still offers anything you could want for a good southern breakfast. They offer chicken and waffles, omelets, steak and eggs and French toast. My favorite brunch menu item is the truly southern benedict, which comes with fresh biscuits, green tomato, country ham, poached eggs, pimiento cheese hollandaise sauce and chopped bacon. For breakfast, you can plan on spending about $12 per person. CombosCombos offer match-ups like soup with a country ham sandwich, soup with a chicken salad sandwich, and soup with a pimento cheese sandwich. If you’d prefer to build a combo of your own, that’s okay too.

13 Principles of Design: The Complete Guide With Examples

design principles and elements

Using similar colours that match and integrate elements organically creates a sense of unity, making the page appear as if it was created together. For example, if a design is made of unusual shapes, such as a triangle with rounded edges, it will stand out in people's minds. So when designing a website or a logo, you should be aware of the psychological principles behind the design and try to incorporate them into your work. A graphic designer must be able to understand both organic and geometric shapes.

Don’t miss anything!

design principles and elements

And, abstract shapes are considered the basic shapes that provide building blocks for any kind of design composition. The five most basic principles of design are unity, hierarchy, repetition, alignment and contrast, but there are many more design principles that you can put into practice. Graphic design is an art form that takes a lot of practice and study.

Principles of Art and Design

To comprehend unity and other fundamental aspects of design, consider exploring the building blocks of visual design on interaction-design.org. Balance in design principles refers to the distribution of visual weight within a composition. It ensures that elements are arranged in a way that doesn't make one side feel heavier than another. Designers use principles such as visibility, findability and learnability to address basic human behaviors. In user experience (UX) design, minimizing users’ cognitive loads and decision-making time is vital. This can be achieved by creating invisible lines with patterns, repeated design elements, anything that adds direction.

Tip 2: Rethink the Axis of Symmetrical Balance

Shapes, colors, objects, textures, or values can create balance in a design. This is an essential principle because imbalance can cause discomfort for the viewer. The elements of design are the parts that define the visual, the tools and components that a person uses to create a composition. In this collage the artist creates rhythm through the repetition of shape and pattern. Beginning with the red checkered floor the viewer's eye is drawn from the niches in front room into the subsequent middle and back rooms. Squares and rectangles are repeated throughout the composition.

White Space

In a way, proportions are similar to balance, but it is measured more from the human eye than with guidelines and grids on design software. Proportions are realistic estimates and weights you apply to your content. As a beginner, however, these elements and principles of design will definitely come in handy and will help you develop a personal style. Graphic design has its principles and rules that you generally need to follow to create stunning visuals.

Frequently asked questions about principles of design

Search for “principles of design” and Google will return results for articles that include from five to more than a dozen individual visual design principles. Even the articles that agree on the number don’t necessarily agree on which ones should be included in that number. You can show variety through colors, shapes, images, different typefaces, and other design elements. White space, or negative space, gives your composition room to breathe and helps certain elements stand out.

How to Build a Website With AI: A Foolproof Guide

By employing contrast in design, you can add visual interest to any space. The principle of unity in design means creating a sense of coherence or overall harmony. In other words, all the elements in a design should work together to create a cohesive whole. When unity is successful, the viewer should feel that the design is balanced and organized, with no random or misplaced elements. However, too much unity can result in a boring or “flat” design, so it’s important to find the right balance. By understanding and applying the principle of unity, you can create designs that are pleasing to the eye and easy to understand.

Elements of Design: Everything You Should Know

It draws the viewer’s attention right where it is needed, in such a way that it transmits a message, which obviously has its importance. The separation of dominant and subordinate objects is substantial. Color is surely a huge element when creating a stunning design.

The next principle of design, contrast, is closely connected to hierarchy and emphasis. Contrast can be achieved by varying shapes, colors, scale, and layout. Repetition refers to using the same or similar elements throughout your design, either in regular or irregular patterns.

Achieving balance doesn't necessarily mean creating symmetrical designs. Balance can be achieved through careful distribution of visual weight, strategic arrangement of elements, and a sense of harmony in your overall composition. Designers can manipulate perception by altering their designs’ form. They play with light, shadow, and perspective to create illusions of depth and dimensionality.

In most cases, this means the most important information the design is meant to convey. One of the most common complaints designers have about client feedback often revolves around clients who say a design needs to “pop” more. While that sounds like a completely arbitrary term, what the client generally means is that the design needs more contrast.

Any seasoned designer would tell you that emphasis can make or break an advertisement. To know what element needs emphasis, you must address the purpose of the creative. What sets the profession apart is that specific data points influence some rules while others are purely human instincts. They help distinguish design pieces from each other while ensuring that they follow the fundamental laws of design. Direction not only gives the illusion that there’s movement in your design, but it also lets people know where to look and how to move their eyes across the visual.

Adding negative space to your designs also creates a sense of cleanliness, purity, and high quality. Enlarging an object’s size is the best way to guide attention. The biggest text and pictures will immediately catch the viewer’s eye, whereas the smallest shapes will be seen last. Without alignment, the elements on your design will look disorganized, confusing, and cluttered. The designer wanted to create some movement, but suddenly almost nothing is aligned. Create variety by adding unique or unexpected elements to your designs.

The Key Elements & Principles of Visual Design IxDF

design principles and elements

By incorporating a number of different elements into a design, we can create a harmonious balance that is both visually appealing and easy to understand. Patterns are a basic element of design and can be found in both natural and artificial objects. In nature, patterns often occur as a result of the repeating shape of leaves or petals, the stripes on a zebra, or the ripples in sand dunes.

Elements And Principles of Design

Despite the occasional bright colors and wacky designs, the key to creating effective patterns is simplicity. Contrast is produced when two or more visual elements in a composition are different. It can be used to create specific effects, emphasize the significance of certain elements, and add visual appeal to your designs. Where symmetrical designs can be quite static and predictable, asymmetrical balance can give designs a more dynamic feel. Designers should aim to understand how each of these design principles actually impact their work.

This makes typography one of the most important graphic and web design elements. It is the actual carrier of your message and the mood creator. Besides being an important addition to the other elements of design, color can absolutely stand alone on its own. Design compositions made up of color and text, are simpler and have a greater impact if you’re trying to make a point. Form refers to the positive element over the space of your work.

Applying Principles of Design into Practice

White space—also referred to as “negative space”— is the areas of a design that do not include any design elements. Contrast refers to how different elements are in a design, particularly adjacent elements. Contrast is also a very important aspect of creating accessible designs. Insufficient contrast can make text content in particular very difficult to read, especially for people with visual impairments.

How an artist uses these elements is important to the overall quality and effectiveness of their work. If the goal of art is to communicate a message, then the fundamentals of design give critics a way of checking whether an art piece does so effectively. For critics, the seven principles of design also help ensure they aren’t labeling works as “bad” just because they don’t suit their personal tastes, too.

Create Stunning Content!

The red will draw the eye because it’s a different color from the main text. Hierarchy is easily applied by the use of titles, headings, subheadings, and body text. The first thing the reader should immediately see is your title. That’s why it’s significantly larger than other elements in your design. It’s important to familiarize yourself with the most common eye movement patterns, F- and Z-patterns, and the layer cake pattern. F- and Z-patterns are more common on image-heavy pages, while the layer cake pattern is facilitated by lots of text with headings and subheadings.

design principles and elements

This video will cover the principles of design and elements of design. This is a quick overview of how you apply principles and elements of design in dressmaking. The ‘Principles’ of design are a way of arranging the basic elements to create one whole design. How these elements and principles are applied will determine how successful a design may, or not be. Watch out for a more detailed discussion of this topic in our upcoming posts. Not everyone is gifted or has the ability to put elements together to come up with visual content.

Visual Design: The Ultimate Guide

Pattern uses a repeated arrangement of elements to create consistency and unity throughout. Patterns can be regular or irregular, symmetrical or asymmetrical balance. Also known as "white space," this design element uses space as part of the design. It can also use the other elements to create the illusion of added information, which tricks the eye into thinking something is there. When it comes to design, color is one of the first things that both users and designers notice. It can function as a standalone element or serve as a backdrop for others, such as lines, forms, textures, or typography.

If there are too many heavy elements, it will be difficult to concentrate. And the opposite, if all of them are way too light, it won’t be catchy enough. Also, there is a term called “white space.” It is an empty space that does not include any elements. The trick is to create some room and discern other parts of the design. It both affects and is affected by it surroundings and the colours in it. Colour tells a story, and also creates moods and atmospheres in a space.

The easiest way to do this is through juxtaposition and contrast. Place bright colors next to lighter hues, text next to images, and round shapes next to square ones. By doing so you can keep viewers engaged and your design interesting. It’s something you see reflected across nature and works of art. It also creates a sense of consistency by using a repeating motif that the viewer comes to expect. This makes it particularly useful when it comes to creating your distinct brand identity.

Designers use a Z-pattern for layouts with less text and more visuals. With this pattern, viewers scan across the top of the page and then diagonally down towards the opposite corner. The F-pattern applies to pages made up mostly of text, like an online or printed article. You want to make sure things look “right”— that the elements look as if they belong together. Because these visuals were repeated so often eventually they became synonymous with the brands they represent. Visual balance is about ensuring your design is equally weighted on both sides of the central point.

Hierarchy in design refers to the arrangement of elements in a way that signifies importance. It guides viewers' eyes, ensuring they focus on primary information first, followed by secondary and tertiary details. Designers establish a visual hierarchy by employing size, contrast, color, and spacing, directing attention and aiding comprehension. Unity in design principles refers to the cohesive arrangement of elements that ensures all parts of a composition work together harmoniously. It's achieved when each element appears to be an integral part of the overall design, resulting in a complete and aesthetically pleasing piece.

These elements should be meticulously meshed with the world’s history, geography, and culture to establish believability and immersion. The foundation of world-building art lies in its ability to weave narrative and storytelling together, creating a coherent experience that resonates with its audience. Effective narratives serve as the backbone of compelling stories, and themes and symbols can enhance the depth and richness of a fictional world.

World-building in the design industry serves as a foundation for storytelling by providing a vivid context that characters and narratives can inhabit. Designers use it to craft fully-realized settings that evoke specific emotional responses and deepen narrative engagement. In world-building, the creation of life forms, from the ordinary to the extraordinary, is central to giving depth to imagined worlds.

The Griffith Observatory was only the third observatory and planetarium facility in the world when it was built in the 1930s. The project was both influenced by and a testament to America’s current economic state. The Depression was in full swing, materials were cheap, which is a large reason the structure only cost $400,000 to complete. Whether they are human races, fantastical species, or extraterrestrial beings, each group possesses distinct physical traits, societal norms, and cultural practices. Here, a creator thinks about the relationships between species and their surroundings, how vegetation is adapted to its climate, and what food chains exist. One can envision lush, vibrant rainforests teeming with life or sparse deserts where only the hardiest creatures can survive. Carefully crafting these details gives depth to the world and can drive narratives.

You can use your sketch as the foundation for a finished work in whatever medium you prefer. The Case Study House project was part of an effort between the 1940s and 1960s to design affordable homes that kept up with the increased demand for housing following World War II. Experts describe structures exhibiting it (including the LAX Theme Building) as “exaggerated” and futuristic. It’s not hard to see why; its design is the very definition of enduring, having survived numerous earthquakes and changes in design taste. In this post, we’ll take a look at 25 of the most iconic Los Angeles buildings. You’ll recognize some of them from films but we’ve included some hidden gems as well.

“It really came together in a series of skyscrapers—maybe two dozen—designed by a handful of architects who all knew each other,” Robins says. An office space in the Gatehouse is now a soothing spa-inspired lounge designed by Margaret Lalikian. The designer referenced the house’s original name, El Robles—Spanish for oak tree—with a tree-filled landscape mural by Arpy Dabbaghian. “For the wall mural, I had to pick something to bring them into nature and a calming environment,” Lalikian says.

However, the non-accredited degree is not, by itself, recognized as an accredited degree. The historic Palacio de Mansilla, protected under heritage decrees, is undergoing a rehabilitation project. To ensure a truly immersive setting, attention to cultural specifics is paramount. This means considering the fine details of daily life, governance, religion, and social hierarchy. Cultural details lend credibility to a fictional society, making it recognizably human yet distinct. The particulars should be woven seamlessly into the narrative, allowing the audience to discover the culture organically through the characters’ interactions and the unfolding story.

Neither of these came to pass, but some of their modular ambition lives on in Braunschweig’s 3 x 3-metre spaceframe. Our family enjoyed the beautiful ocean view from the condo, onsite pickleball court, beach side seating and umbrellas, and the convenient location. Restaurants, shops and groceries within walking distance. One thing to consider, we stayed during the peak of Spring Break, the week before Easter, and there were a LOT of high school aged kids partying into the early morning. HOS’s security did a good job to make sure it didn’t bother guests on site.

There is a second full bath with granite. The living area has a flat panel smart TV. Fully equipped kitchen with granite countertops and stainless-steel appliances. Full size washer and dryer in the unit.

The view is excellent but the unit is in terrible need for updating. Since my negative review from last year, the only thing the owner had done is replace the washer/dryer. The furniture is garbage and the size of the TV’s are a joke. The rent has increased to over $5.0K per week. For $700+/night, I expect first class furnishings that on on par with the view.

The rental this time was located on the left side facing the beach. I usually stay on the side where I can watch the sunset. You can always watch the sunset from the top of the building or on the beach. There is construction going on next to the rental but that wasn’t really a deal breaker. Next, from the center of vision, project a gridded floor into the room that replicates the gridded floor you drew in your floor plan, recalling that one square equals one square foot. The project’s focus is on learning how to draw a three-dimensional scene using principles of perspective developed by Renaissance artists (see Drawing a Three-Dimensional Room below). My secret intention, however, is to help students construct a clear, mental image of a physical place where they’ve reached their art-making goals. The full assignment involves creating both interior and exterior views, but for the purpose of this article, I chose seven interiors from last spring’s class of 30 students. Los Angeles City Hall is yet another example of historic downtown Los Angeles buildings in the Art Deco style. Rather, they aimed to create the building in a new “Modern American” style that did not lean too heavily on existing aesthetics.

Renaissance artists developed technical rules for drawing three-dimensional interiors, but you can simplify the formula. Students and seasoned artists alike can use “outcome visualization” to attain any goal or objective. We can all take Aristotle’s philosophy to heart, and — whether we draw it, paint it or sculpt it — with patience and hard work, we can make it happen. Rather, modern-day scientific evidence posits that “outcome visualization” is a part of our nature. While the brain may get the wheels in motion, it takes both mind and body to realize an imagined outcome. The science of architecture is continuously evolving and will do so over the life of every architect. In addition to the science of architecture, we are equally committed to ensuring that our graduates acquire a critical philosophy with which they can engage the design of the built environment. It was with this idea in mind that I developed an “outcome visualization” assignment for my drawing and illustration students at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. The project, which spans several weeks, requires students to design their own dream art studio with no restrictions on building size, location, architectural style or, most importantly, cost. The assignment is veiled to guide students on their journeys toward becoming professional artists. Whoever came up with the saying “location, location, location” must have been talking about USC’s School of Cinematic Arts.

Designed by Australian practice Sans-Arc Studio for a small cottage in a suburb of Adelaide, the Plaster Fun House is intended to be at odds to the surrounding brickwork buildings. The internationally - and often controversial - acclaimed artist Christo unveiled the “largest indoor sculpture ever made” back in 2013. Prepared to debut in a public exhibition, the inflated “Big Air Package” was designed to occupy a 117-meter-tall former gas tank known as Gasometer Oberhausen in Germany. The 90-meter-high, 50-meter-wide sculpture was made from 20,350 square meters of semitransparent polyester fabric and 4,500 meters of rope, with a total weight of 5.3 tons and a volume of 177,000 cubic meters. The seemingly endless, inflatable installation was conceived in 2010 and was Christo’s first major work after the passing of his wife and artistic partner Jeanne-Claude in 2009. To understand the Art Deco movement fully, one has to travel back to the early ’20s and the post–World War I society.

The studio equipment she includes in her illustration offers evidence of her fondness for both traditional and digital art. The Gamble House is a perfect example of the American Craftsman architectural style that was becoming popular in the United States at the time (and would remain so into the 1930s). It is hailed as one of the best examples of downtown Los Angeles architecture occupying the Deconstructivism style.

Compelling world-building in art leverages both visual and auditory elements to create immersive experiences. These elements are the building blocks artists use to bring fictional worlds to life, engaging the audience’s senses and enhancing the depth of the narrative. In 2022, 335 Art and Design students graduated with students earning 265 Bachelor's degrees, and 70 Master's degrees. It's a small, private not-for-profit, four-year university in a midsize city. This section delves into designing the ecosystem’s building blocks and the entities that bring myth and legend into being. Places are more than mere backdrops for action; they are living components of the world that interact with and influence the characters and stories. Through these creative explorations, artists construct immersive experiences that captivate and engage audiences, inviting them to explore worlds beyond the confines of reality.

The role of artists and collaborative networks can be instrumental in visualizing these political structures. Creators must meticulously craft each component—from geography to social norms—with a keen eye for consistency and complexity. The art of world-building lies in assembling these parts to create an intricate tapestry that feels tangible to the audience. The most emblematic building on the famous Promenade des Anglais, Nice's main boulevard overlooking the Mediterranean, is the awe-inspiring Palais de la Mediterranée. And while the French Riviera city has no shortage of art deco examples (about 600 of them, actually), the current Hyatt Regency hotel stands out with its grandeur. Modeled after Paris' Opéra Garnier, the white-washed façade of the building features a duo of stately pediments, wondrous bas-reliefs dedicated to the Greek god Poseidon, and imposing arcades and colonnades.

The room’s coffered ceilings were enhanced with a faux-wood decorative painting by Jhon Ardilla. The designers worked with a color palette of Dunn-Edwards paints, and several chose to highlight the brand’s 2024 Color of the Year, a steely blue called Skipping Stones. Nods to Pasadena’s famous peacocks can be found throughout the designs, and many creators fearlessly brought in statement floors, enveloped their spaces with jewel tones, and added texture to ceilings. Others focused on bringing the beauty of the estate’s gardens and views inside with verdant murals, floral fabrics, and nature-inspired lighting. The event draws more than 25,000 guests each year and offers several dining spaces, including Roe Japanese Fusion, the Tudor Rose Bistro, and Wattle & Daub Tavern.

We focus on public space and hope to bring more meaningful experience through our thinking. At the meantime, we don’t mind participating in commercial projects, but we look forward to collaborating clients with similar values to create win-win works that benefit public interest.
